* THE CONFERENCES: The Ricci Conference is named after legendary local tennis party-planner, VIC RICCI. Over the past two decades, no one has thrown more “parties” than Vic. Every week on Monday, Thursday, and Friday (and secretly on Tuesday), Vic has been arranging for the indoor courts at the Saugerties tennis resort, Total Tennis, to be open for community play. All-welcoming and all-seeing from behind his desk, Vic has juggled 20+ local players a night for 20+ years. With good will, a no-stress attitude, and unwavering fealty to his players, Vic has managed to continue his open community nights (Mondays and Fridays) even with The League seeking to devour every last indoor court in the area. Oh, and Vic is also a founding organizer and big supporter of The League, as well as a TLOV champion himself (Season II with Cantine Athletic). The Kasten Conference is named after local coaching great, JOHN KASTEN. Weekend mornings at the Kingston High School courts (before they resurfaced and decided to lock us out, 👎), Kasten would roam the sidelines meeting new players (like me!), talking tennis, and advocating for players to think more about “volume” (shot-making isn’t just about side-to-side angles, it’s about the up-down space as well). Kasten has – free-of-charge, just for the love of the game – coached up many of our local tennis all-stars: Ravi, Wayne, Turco, Hack (S. & B.), Loewen (E. & D.), Han, The Commish. New idea for a League Challenge Event: play points while Kasten is standing on the court actively giving pointers and advice – who can win the most points before he stops you to explain why the “unit turn” is a myth?
